Returning to Sanibel: Resilience in the Wake of Hurricane Ian

October 19, 2022

After Hurricane Ian’s devastation, we made the difficult decision to return to Sanibel to continue telling the story of this unique community. Despite the widespread destruction and reluctance for media coverage on the island, the residents and business owners we had met earlier welcomed us back, offering an opportunity to witness firsthand the resilience and strength that has always defined Sanibel.

Reconnecting with the Community

Having spent two weeks back on the island after the storm, we reconnected with the incredible individuals we had met during our earlier visits. Each of them, though facing the wreckage of their homes and livelihoods, expressed a shared determination to rebuild. In this time of uncertainty, we found that the spirit of the island community remains steadfast.

  • Emily: A Tour of Devastation and Hope
Emily, the trolley driver from Adventures in Paradise, had previously shown us the charming and peaceful side of Sanibel. This time, she took us on a very different journey—one that led us through the storm’s aftermath. From the wreckage of her trolleys to the flooded roads, we witnessed the sheer scale of the damage. Yet, amid the destruction, Emily’s optimism shone through. Though much had been lost, she remains determined to help rebuild and restore Sanibel to its former beauty.

  • Captain Brian: A Supplies Run to Pine Island
Our trip also took us to Pine Island, where we joined Captain Brian on a mission to deliver essential supplies to those in desperate need. The destruction on Pine Island was as overwhelming as it was heartbreaking. Yet, it was clear that the community was already starting to regroup, and people like Captain Brian were at the forefront, providing support and hope in these challenging times. One poignant moment on our journey was seeing the Taboo, a well-known boat, overturned and resting on its side in the mangroves—a symbol of the storm’s force, but also the island’s resilience in the face of adversity.

  • Tyler and Megan: Storm Shelling on Keiss Island
Our final stop brought us to Marco Island, where we met Tyler and Megan of Ocean Soul Shell Jewelry. Though displaced from their home due to eight feet of storm surge, Tyler and Megan continue to find strength in their craft. They took us on a shelling tour of Keiss Island, showing us how the storm had reshaped the area. As they sifted through the sand, collecting shells, it became clear that, despite the devastation, they were rebuilding—just as the island and its community would rebuild in time.

A Story of Rebuilding and Resilience

While Hurricane Ian brought immense destruction to Sanibel and the surrounding areas, the island’s spirit remains unbroken. The people we’ve met—like Emily, Captain Brian, Tyler, and Megan—continue to inspire us with their resilience and unwavering determination to restore their homes, businesses, and way of life.

The road to recovery will be long, but as we continue documenting the aftermath of this disaster, we are reminded of the power of community and the strength that comes from coming together in the face of hardship. The island has always been defined by its beauty and its people, and even in the face of such overwhelming challenges, those same qualities will be what sees it through to recovery.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to witness and share the story of Sanibel’s resilience in the wake of Hurricane Ian.
